Take a deep breath ladies and gentlemen. It’s that time of year again. No, not the “deck the halls with boughs of holly” time of year, but the “big teddy bears, heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, and a dozen red roses” time of year – it’s Valentine’s Day.
For many years, Valentine’s Day has been a celebration of a couple’s love. But for many of us, the holiday feels quite different. (Should I call my mom and agree to go out with that nice young man from the grocery store?) But that’s all OK. This year, I’m spending my Valentine’s Day exploring ways to love someone very important to me — myself.
There are so many reasons to practice self-love. For one, it’s the source of personal and professional growth. It also motivates us to achieve the things we want, influences self-confidence, and impacts our overall sense of well-being. We carry the way we treat ourselves into our careers, friendships, connections with community, and attitudes on life’s meaningfulness. So here are a few suggestions on how to show yourself a little love on February 14.
Start your workday off with a yoga session and an acai bowl
Office yoga minimizes stress and makes it easier for you to focus on your tasks throughout the day. Start the morning with some mind-clearing breathwork and deep stretching to get your mind and body collected. And get your colleagues involved by offering a Valentine’s Day-themed acai bowl to those who take on this healthy practice.
Treat yourself (and the office) to something sweet
Let’s be real, Valentine’s Day is infamously associated with those sweet things we all crave. Chocolate, strawberries… chocolate covered strawberries! But there is so much more — why limit yourself? Indulge yourself (and your team too) with treats you don’t usually get in the office.
In San Francisco, Creperie Saint Germain’s annual Valentine’s Day crepes are an office favorite. And in Denver, Peteybird Ice Cream Sandwiches are a must have. The options are endless!
Share a heart healthy meal with your team
Chocolate doesn’t have to be king in the workplace. If you’re looking to keep those New Year’s resolutions going, try a pink, protein-packed poke bowl. This healthy and customizable meal is a great way to show your heart some love. Vegetarians can even indulge with a hearty poke-inspired beet bowl.
Keep the Valentine’s theme going with heart-shaped pizza
You can never go wrong with pizza. And if you’re lucky enough to be in LA, Barone’s heart-shaped pizza should help you do the trick. You might want to make this one a grouplove meal if you know what I mean.
Go for an afternoon stroll
Bonus points for squeezing in a short walk. Take a few deep breaths, enjoy nature, and express gratitude toward yourself (and chocolate, and poke, and pizza).
No matter how you choose to spend Valentine’s Day, don’t forget to love yourself.
